Gardening and Growing at SCPO

Nielsen House's vegetable garden is thriving as its second year of growth comes to an end, and Jennifer House also celebrated a successful season with its own small but mighty garden. The gardens produced an incredible variety of fresh vegetables, including eggplant, heirloom tomatoes, bell peppers, collard greens, pumpkins, and more. Both houses came together with volunteers to help nurture the gardens, and the abundance of fresh produce became a key part of daily meals. Vibrant photos captured residents and staff preparing food, showcasing the rich colors of the freshly harvested vegetables.

Gardening offers more than just nutritious food; it provides both physical and mental health benefits. Physically, gardening is a great form of low-impact exercise, promoting strength and flexibility. Mentally, it helps reduce stress, boost mood, and encourage mindfulness, giving residents the opportunity to connect with nature. The sense of accomplishment from growing and harvesting the produce is incredibly rewarding, fostering a sense of confidence and purpose in each participant.

As the colder months approach, both houses are preparing to winterize their vegetable gardens. Volunteers and supporters are always welcome to join in this important work. Whether you're interested in gardening or supporting in other ways, your involvement is vital to the success of these gardens and the nourishment they bring to our residents.
