The Nielsen House Cat Colony

Nielsen House is excited to share a new video that highlights our unique feral cat colony! Our feline friends, all black or gray, are a curious and social bunch, although they prefer to keep their distance and avoid being petted. Over the past few years, the residents of Nielsen House took on the heartwarming project of building a shelter for these cats, bringing electricity to it in 2023. This allowed us to install two heated beds, making the space more comfortable during the colder months.

Interestingly, one of the cats has claimed one bed entirely, leaving the other one untouched. We're not sure why the second bed hasn't been used, but we're planning to try something new this winter to encourage its use.

This cat shelter is just one part of our broader Arts & Nature Program at Spiritus Christi Prison Outreach. This program not only supports the cat colony but also encourages art-making, musical endeavors, and tending to our vegetable garden. These initiatives wouldn't be possible without the generous support of our donors, volunteers, residents, and staff, who all contribute to making Nielsen House a nurturing and creative environment.
